Yes, things have gotten crazy here. There is so much going on and deadlines are rapidly approaching. You see our lease ends on our current house at the end of September so we’re frantically trying to get the trailer and property setup so we can move in there. Yeah, I know, we’re a bit nuts.
Step 1: Fix the driveway. There isn’t anything technically wrong with the driveway, it’s just that it zigzags back and forth a few times before you get where you’re going. So we are working to make it straighter. This involves changing the location where it connects with the road. You need a permit for that. So we trundled off to the municipal office a few weeks ago and put in our application. As luck would have it, I got called back later that same day with approval. I’m sure all of my permits won’t be that easy 😛
To get the work done, trees need to be cut and a bulldozer or similar large machine will need to come and shove some dirt around to create the new entrance and grade the slope. So what have we done on this part, you may ask? We bought a chainsaw 😈
Yes, I am now a chainsaw wielding maniac, at least as far as the trees are concerned.
I haven’t put in as much time cutting trees as I would like due to weather and other things we are working on at the same time. We are up at our land every weekend, so we’re doing our best. The cats are getting really tired of all the travel though.
I do have one action shot of me mercilessly cutting the limbs off a tree that had just been felled. It’s a gruesome job, but, unfortunately, it has to be done.
Other things we need to do include: building a shelter for our new composting toilet, move the trailer about 200 feet to a better spot, insulate the trailer and provide sufficient heating, acquire a means of electrical hookup (gonna get some solar panels, weeeeeeee!!!) and so on. I’ll do my best to keep you posted, but as I mentioned, we’re pretty busy, especially with all the travel back and forth.
One nice bonus is we were up on the property on the long weekend in August and we had some spectacular clear, hot weather. It was also very clear at night which as great because we had the full moon on the 10th. Kat and I took the opportunity to hike up to the top of the hill and ensconce ourselves in full moon glory. I even took a picture, which didn’t turn out too bad.
Oh the benefits of not being near any big cities 🙂
